FIRST CLASS RESULTS AND MORTONS  AWARD FOR NEW MUM NINA

Nina Huitson is this year’s winner of the Mortons Solicitors Prize for Outstanding Achievement in Law at the University of Sunderland. Nina achieved a first class honours degree in law and the Mortons award while juggling the care of her baby daughter and a part time job.

Nina began studying for her degree in 2006. When she found out she was pregnant, Nina left to look after her baby daughter Grace. She returned to her studies in 2009 and her commitment and talent saw her quickly rise to the top across all modules.

Her mother, who was as anxious as Nina that she should return to her studies, has helped to look after Grace while Nina is at lectures.  Nina, who is 23 and lives with Grace in Grangetown, has also worked at T-Mobile during evenings and weekends throughout her degree. Her only compromise was to drop one shift in her third year to help with the pressure of revision.
Mortons has supported the University of Sunderland’s Law Department for many years. Giles McCourt, Business and Employment Associate at Mortons, said: “Nina’s achievement is exceptional. She is a great example to those embarking on their studies of what can be achieved with commitment and hard work. We are delighted to be able to recognise her effort and ability.”

Nina now hopes to gain a training contract with a law firm. She said: “I’ve loved every aspect of law, particularly in my third year, where my modules included family, commercial and succession law.

“The lecturers at the law department are absolutely great. I came from Bede College and my law lecturer there told me that Sunderland’s law department was brilliant, and I’m so pleased I took her advice and came here.

“I always sought feedback from the lecturers and acted on what I was told. All of the lecturers work hard to help you do well, and gave me all the time and advice I needed to get ahead. I would recommend studying law at Sunderland to anyone.”

Amy Purvis, programme leader for the undergraduate law degree at the University of Sunderland said: “Nina thoroughly deserves this award and her first class degree. She has achieved outstanding results while coping with the demands of childcare and a busy part-time job. I am sure she will continue to attain great results in the future.

“The University and Mortons have built a strong relationship over the years. Mortons has provided lectures for our students and supported the law department for some time. We really appreciate the firm’s involvement with our courses and are grateful to them for sponsoring this prize”

Angela Ashcroft, senior partner at Mortons, said: "We have been proud to support Sunderland Law School over recent years. It is rewarding to see new talent such as Nina emerge from the courses run by the university and we are proud to put our name to this prize. We wish Nina every success in her future career and feel sure that she will excel in all that she undertakes. Well done Nina."

The University of Sunderland’s law department was the only one of any UK university to achieve 100% student satisfaction in the Guardian league tables 2011.
